RL: Please tell us about yourself?
OC: Hi, I’m Olivia! I’m a 25 year old jeweller who graduated from the School of Jewellery in Birmingham and I’m now working at a jewellery manufacturing company as a 3D print Technician. I started making jewellery many years ago as a hobby and went to the School Of Jewellery in the Jewellery Quarter to hone my skills and learn more.
RL: Please tell us about your design?
OC: My work is primarily silver jewellery either CAD or hand created. I like working small with textures and with geometric and natural patterns.
For my final project at SOJ, I chose to do something a little out of the box. I created a miniature room out of laser cut wood which I designed in CAD and then had small household objects in silver as swappable pendants. It was to play on the feeling of nostalgia with a Polly Pocket vibe to it.
I wanted to have different rooms each with different collectible objects, each room almost modular in their fitting together. I thought this could be a good way to reach to people with different interests, ie. An art studio, a garden shed, a kitchen or a gym.
I had RazorLab laser cut the room out for me which I assembled once it arrived and it was perfect. It was great to have the physical piece after staring at it on a screen for so long and it made my project much more tangible.
I hope to pick this project up again soon and get more rooms made and on the market!
RL: What do you like about laser cutting and the material/s you used?
OC: Laser Cutting was fantastic for what I needed, otherwise I would have been cutting these shapes out by hand and spending a lot of time on each part which would dramatically up the cost of my project. It was quick, easy and the result was fab. It was easier on myself in my time scale but also a great option for mass production and getting the same wonderful results each time.
RL: What made you choose RazorLAB?
OC: I asked my tutor at the School of Jewellery for a recommendation on a laser cutting company and he gave me your name! I’m really glad that he did because the service was incredible. The turn around time was amazing and I was sent progress shots throughout the whole process.
RL: Where can we see your work?
OC: I post all of jewellery work on Instagram.
